Liposuction is a method of permanently removing fat cells, using a hollow stainless
Steel tube with the assistance of a powerful vacuum. It is ideal for removing fatty deposits that remain despite diet and exercise. It is not a treatment for obesity or a method for weight reduction. It can be used to remove fat from many different sites around the body-typically the thighs, abdomen, buttocks, or backs of the arms. It is also an effective method for treating Gynaecomastia, the enlargement of male breast tissue.
The term ‘liposculpture’ was coined in the 1990s, and referred to the use of a smaller cannula, to target smaller areas, under local anaesthesia (with sedation in some cases). Today liposuction and liposculpture are used interchangeably. The goal of treatment is not just fat removal, but producing a smooth sculptured contour.
With lipoaugmentation, fat is transferred from one area of the body to another in order to create a fuller, more youthful appearance. Lipoaugmentation is often carried out on the face and breasts or areas that have a contour deformity because of an accident or previous surgery. It may also be used to fill out small areas of fat loss such as the back of the hands or around the eyes, thereby rejuvenating the patient’s appearance.
